Food Access and Local Economic Development

Columbus, Ohio, U.S.A

We established a non-profit called the OneLinden Cooperatives that would develop a business based on locally and sustainably sourced food, that is worker-owned, pays living wages and provides employment opportunities for previously incarcerated residents.

Food Security and Climate Change

Working with local growers from three Q’echi Maya villages in southern Belize to understand and address the impacts of climate change on the milpa system and corn yields.

Lessons Learned: The Impacts of Urbanisation and Climate Change on Food Security.

  • Food security within the villages is threatened by anthropogenic and climate impacts
  • Changing climate lengthened the rainy season – shortening the growing season
  • Less milpa yields and more grass weeds in milpas
  • Young men no longer want to farm – more ‘jobbing out’
  • New road built connecting villages to major towns led to food entrepreneurs selling food to villages
